When it comes to our horses, their safety and well being is our number one concern. That was the driving sentiment to why John Lyons created his round pen. For too many years, John saw horses being injured by round pens that were not constructed specifically for horses. To resolve this problem, in 1988, John Lyons designed the John Lyons’ Round Pen, the only movable, aluminized steel round pen made specifically for your horse.
What makes John Lyons' Round Pens safer for you and your horse is the culmination of many years of experience. In the design of the John Lyons' Round Pen, John started with the basics: Straighter, higher, thicker, lighter, and most importantly, panel spacing.
Straight Corners
One of the oldest concerns related to round pens are the round corners on the top of the panels. When connected they make a funnel shape, allowing a horse to get a leg wedged. The John Lyons' panels are hand welded, creating a 90 degree angle instead of a rounded corner. Not only does this minimize the chance for a horse to get injured, the weld adds to the overall strength of the panel.
Panel Height
When horses are frightened, they run away from danger. If that means jumping over obstacles to reach safety, they will. At 6 feet tall, the height of the panel tells the horse, “I’m here and so are you.” This allows you to focus on your horse with less worry of them trying to jump out.
Pipe Diameter
Horses are curious by nature, and always seem willing to get themselves into trouble, whether it’s running into panels, using them as scratching posts, or standing on them. The John Lyons' panels are larger in diameter which adds to the strength of the pipe and increases their longevity. The pipe diameter is consistent throughout the panels, eliminating possible sharp angles.
Light Weight
In the past, cleaning and tilling the space inside the round pen was a real chore. The John Lyons' panels only weigh about 75 lbs., allowing one person to move them with ease. Moving the panels around is great for cleaning or storing during the months when you are not working a horse. The panels also are easy to rearrange into different configurations, in about 10 minutes you can transform a 60 ft. round pen into four box stalls.
Designed Spacing
Whether it’s to cool off, scratch, or just stretch, horses like to roll. With the John Lyons' Round Pen you will no longer have the same worries about your horse getting a leg caught in the panels as you once did. At twice the normal distance between support bars, the John Lyons' panels are spaced specifically so a horse can free a leg if it goes between the support bars.
With the basic round pen designed, John saw the need for additional features which make the John Lyons' Round Pen the one of choice!
The Gate
Leading can be a time of excitement if your horse gets hung up going through a gate. With the capability to swing open from either side, the 6 ft. wide and 8 ft. high gate panel allows you to move easily through the John Lyons' gate.
Gate Latch
The John Lyons' latch on the gate opens from either direction. It also is placed high enough so if you need to open the gate from horse back you can do it with ease.
Aluminized Steel
As the seasons change, mother nature has a way of taking its’ toll on metal panels. To maximize the longevity of our panels against the elements, the John Lyons' panel are made of aluminized steel. The aluminized steel, with the proper care, can stand the test of time against rust and other weather related damage.
With over 10,000 John Lyons' Round Pens spanning the globe, the John Lyons' Round Pen is time tested and well travelled. With this round pen, you can feel confident that while you train your horses, you will have a safe, weather resistant working environment. The John Lyons’ Round Pen is the perfect training tool which will last a life time.
